So Bradford would say the decision was a difficult one — even though he knew it would come to him eventually. He'd say he was going to miss football and the teammates he had won a Super Bowl with. But he'd tell the entire story as though he didn't actually know what was coming, that it was all just an elaborate scheme to make it seem he wasn't upset. You could tell. He almost always seemed sad. He never appeared happy or excited about the news, but he would always feel some level of respect for the player who would be told he'd no longer be a professional athlete, even if it meant the end of his career. Bradford was supposed to be in Miami today, spending time with his former teammates, the ones who, like he, were going through the pain of realizing he was leaving the NFL. They know he didn't want to talk about the decision, but they still wanted to spend time together, to toast to what they accomplished together. But Bradford decided not to go. The decision to end his professional football career, according to those close to him, was not an easy one. "Sam wants to do this," says his agent, Eric Russell. "He just can't deal with the pressure. He feels he let his teammates down. He wants to do this without hurting anybody." Bradford is the 14th quarterback drafted No. 1 overall since 2000 and the first to lose his starting job because of injury. He was traded from the St. Louis Rams to the Eagles in March, then injured himself in the second game of the season and was shut down. He wanted to keep playing, but the Eagles wouldn't let him, and he knew he would have to sit out the entire season. Bradford's time with the Eagles, however, has been filled with more controversy and more questions than any of his previous 11 seasons in the NFL. He missed several practices and meetings, including a team meeting in which most of the players were not allowed to attend. He was fined for sitting down in an offensive meeting and talking to head coach Chip Kelly. He's been ac619d1d87
